What would youwant to learn in an art education class?

The Discipline Based Arts Education has guidelines for how to teach art I’m curious about what students would expect to learn. How to draw/paint (technical-studio)? The history of works or the artist? How to critique art? How to look at art (aesthetics)? What would youexpect to know after taking an art class in highscool?

I would like to know how the visual arts have changed daily life. For example: how Warhol’s work influenced graphic design from today.

in that way “artclass” isn’t about this paralell world from beyond, but about how the here and now is influancable.

I would like to understand technique more. I would also like to try some of the newer forms of art like using liquid fiberglass and mounting pieces together to form 3 dimensional art

My high school art instructor did a great job of teaching our class. It influenced me to dig deeper, and learn more..until i finally said…”art will be my career”

The instructor taught a variety of methods and techniques in art. We did watercolors, oil, acrylics, pastels, oil pastels, graphite, india ink, etching on mirror. Basically a little bit of everything in traditional art. At begining of each class we also hand excerisies to develope better hand eye cordination..sometimes having a student sit on a chair..and we’ll all draw him/her. Every week we turned in a sketch of whatever we wanted in our sketchbooks.

He also brought in few ex students..and they showed us their portfolios..what they do…and what we as students can do with art in the real world.

All that info gave me a good stepping stone in all the mediums, and applied it to reality by the end of the school year. It gave me just enough info to figure things out on my own. Art classes in a specific major in college will teach you the rest..but for high school..just techniques and a strong foundation to grow on.

Too many students go into college declaring an art major, when they cant even grasp the basics.
